My Passion is Athlete Mental Health

Updated: Jun 11, 2019

Welcome to my blog on athlete mental health! I'm glad you made it and I look forward to sharing at the very least, helpful Sport Psychology related information, and at the most, life changing, light bulb switching, performance enhancing content.

My name is Joe Puentes, Psy.D., and I am a Clinical and Sport Psychologist in the San Francisco Bay area. I’ve been working with NCAA student athletes for 10+ years. I consider it an incredible honor to work with young adults at this dynamic and important time in their life. I was once a college athlete myself, and as I often tell people, I would do about anything to go back in time and know what I know now, and be able to apply it back then. I would have 1) performed better, 2) saved myself a lot of suffering and 3) ultimately had more fun competing. Now that’s my passion, to share the knowledge and expertise from the field of Sport Psychology and my work with athletes over a decade so that they can benefit in their life and sport. My commitment is to student athletes’ well-being first and foremost and my experience proves that peak performance flows from there.

I'll be writing weekly on a range of Sport Psychology topics including peak performance strategies, recovery from injury, preparing for college athletics, rejuvenating from burnout, overcoming performance anxiety and fear of failure, using breathing as a competitive advantage, team dynamics, parenting student athletes, working with sports medicine staff and beyond. This blog is targeted at student athletes as well as their caretakers whether it be parents, coaches, sports medicine staff and administrators.
